Driving with a Dragonfly

This was written in September 2005.

Life has many firsts.
This early evening I drove towards Chardon for a Coldstone treat. As I neared the end of Billings Road, a mild swarm of dragonflies criss-crossed my path. I heard a thump on my car. I realized I could have a specimen of a dragonfly.

On my return trip home as I turned down Billings Road again, I spied dragonflies on the road. I unceremoniously picked one up by its wing. I thought it was dead. It was not.

I carefully placed it on the passenger seat beside me and drove on home.
I dropped it on the ground when getting out of the car. I finally managed to place it safely inside.

I then stepped outside to fill the bird feeders. There in front of me was another first, a mini meadow of yellow sunflower like flowers. They had grown there due to the seeds fallen from the bird feeder. I noticed the seedlings and therefore did not mow them down.

The bird feeders were a first this past year. First were the more than twenty-five varieties of birds winging their way into our yard and into my heart.

I mused about the firsts I had this past year. In life we celebrate the first step, the first tooth, the first birthday. As we grow we do not celebrate the firsts of our lives. When they happen, we whirl through life, missing the celebration and the sunlight of it all.

This then is my celebration of firsts during the last fifteen months.

First year living with Ed in the same house.
First year knowing what it is to miss having children to come home to.
My first two sons having their first Sons.
My first born being the first of my children to receive her endowment.
A first time to read the Book of Mormon more than once in the same year.
The first time I have gone more than six months without a calling the church.
My first red colored car.
First time the missionary monthly meal calendar was completely filled.
First time to pick up my brother-in-law Roland from the airport and have a two-hour chat and journey.
Having a happy six months of unemployment and being paid for it.
First quilt shop-hopping journey.
Listing of some of the firsts of my life.
First celebration of new firsts in life.
First anticipation of more firsts.
